From 1984 to 1994, the Winston-Salem Spirits were summer nights in the 336. Blue and green under the lights at old Ernie Shore. Paper programs. Affordable baseball that felt like it belonged to the city.
By the fall of ’94, team officials launched a “Name the Team” contest to give the Spirits a fresh identity. Over 1,000 entries rolled in, and Winston-Salem did not hold back. Air Pollution. Dirt Dobbers. Smokers. Tobacconeers. Woolly Worms. The list alone tells you everything about this town’s personality.
But for a lot of folks, the Spirits were the era.
This one’s for the ones who remember when minor league baseball felt close, loud, and personal.
